Park City’s Labor Day events are famous in these parts. The town’s mining population re-christened Labor Day as Miner’s Day in the late 1800’s when Silver was King and most men worked deep in the mountains under the ski runs of today.

Miner’s Day this Monday, September 6th will again feature a parade, a mucking & drilling contest, and the Funky 5K Race.

Costumes make the Funky 5K funky. Racers are encouraged to wear costumes — serious runners, walkers, teens, and families alike. There are prizes for the funkiest costumes, moms or dads with costumed babies in running strollers, and the best “Centipede Team” of five costumed runners. If you don’t want to wear a costume there’s a prize for you too — first, second and third place medals in gender and categories.

The Funky 5K Race is a fundraiser for Arts-Kids, the Park City after-school youth development program using the expressive arts and group techniques to serve at-risk youth. Arts-Kids was founded in 1999 at two schools in Park City, Utah, and has expanded to ten Summit County elementary and middle schools and to the Ute Indian Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah. To maintain accessibility, this education and social service program has always been free of charge to students. Participation in the Funky 5K Race and other donations makes this possible.

Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $10 for kids at www.Arts-Kids.org. Registration the day of the race begins at 7 am and is $30 for adults and $20 for children. All racers who register by August 15th will receive a free t-shirt. Everybody gets a goodie bag, filled with Park City coupons and offers.

Registration on September 6th is held at City Park during the Pancake Breakfast, which is sponsored by the Park City Rotary Club and the Ambassadors. The race start is at 8:30 am from City Park. The route goes up the Poison Creek Trail, proceeds around Old Town and finishes in front of the Parade Judges Booth at The Riverhorse on Main Street.

The Funky 5K is a real community event. This year’s Official Sponsor is Winder Farms. Local Tourist is proud to be a sponsor as well and has donated a two-night stay in a Black Bear Lodge condominium as a prize!

Coming from out of town? For a special Overnight Package offering a one-night stay at the Park City Peaks Hotel, transportation to Main Street for the Carb dinner Sunday night, and all race registrations, go to www.Arts-Kids.org for information.
